My pool is almost clean and ready for summer, and I feel pretty good. I have to go to my office and make a powerpoint for a seminar I am teaching to a bunch of winegrape folks in Napa, but after a morning of pool cleaning, I am having a well-deserved beer as a reward first.

As I think about graduating from a scooter yo a motorcycle, I think the first one should be cheap and limited on power. I keep eyeballing old Japanese bikes like this as a starter bike for practice. I’m not saying I would buy this, but less than $2k, 500-600 cc (or less) for a bike I won’t be upset if I drop. What do you think?
Realistically, I am a couple of years out from buying a “cool” bike. I have gone over budget on the Sunchaser, and my wife very sweetly asked me if we could save for new windows and exterior paint on the house. She is very patient with my vehicles, so a savings plan has to go her way before I add another motor to the driveway.
NOTE: I have already tried to explain that motorcycles do not take up nearly as much room as those old Datsuns I keep showing her, and won’t involve the same kind of restoration costs. She just smiles sweetly ams looks at me like a special education child in her classroom.
ADMISSION: Sitting here nursing a beer and playing on Oppo instead of doing my dumb powerpoint. Sue me.

You can’t really go wrong with a Ninja 250. There’s always used ones for sale because people are moving up to bigger bikes, when it’s time for you to sell it you’ll be able to get what you paid for out of it unless you’ve destroyed it, they’re pretty simple to work on, and they have cool styling.
Also, I wish I could have a beer when I’m done cleaning the pool, but for me I’d be at work doing it and they’d get annoyed with me.

+1 for that suggestion as I’ve had one and they’re fun as hell and super nimble. And cheap!
My Sunday involved waking up with strong coffee, eating a big breakfast, and I’m about to zip over the winery on the other end of the island and get my free glass of champagne (club members get a free glass of their choosing every day). After that it’ll be another beer or two at Lucky 13, a big German pretzel and a big fruit and cheese plate, followed by watching the Red Hot Chili Peppers live from nearly the front row tonight.
California living FTW.

I just dumped another 4 lb. of shock into mine a couple hours ago. It has gone from green to cloudy. Hopefully some clarifier tomorrow and the filter can trap it all. I’m still a few weeks away I think.

Some oldster set her kitchen on fire in the condo unit behind mine, so I got to sit out in the cold while the fire department inspected the entire building. And now my place smells.

my day job is actually Certified Pool Operator.
get some of this:
https://www.amazon.com/Technical-Pool-Solutions-Cloudy-Clarifier/dp/B019QQO49Q
It’s what we use on all 11 pools and hot tubs on our property at work. Stuff is fantastic.
We also went away from chlorine shock to non-chlorine shock, which has made a difference too.

So I went to visit my other father who’s in hospice currently. It’s pretty hard watching someone you love slowly die right in front of you. Cancer sure is a bitch.

My friend who was in hospice died this morning. I sympathize.

yes it is. my grandmother passed in January at 93 after a short stay in hospice. We all knew she was ready to go. My younger cousin- who was very close to her- gave a wonderful eulogy at her service, and lightened the mood by saying she “hit fast-forward over the last month.” A week before she passed, I visited her at the assisted-living facility she lived in for the past year, and it was all the nurses could do to wake her. but once she was awake she was mostly lucid if not confused about a few things. a couple of days later, I was on my way home from work and got a text from my mom that she had taken a turn for the worse and they were going to see her. I went there (about 6:00 p.m.) and ended up staying there until 3:00 a.m. All the while her frail body lay in bed, breathing 6-10 times per minute. The nurses kept assuring us she was “comfortable,” even though we all knew that meant “unconscious and doped up with enough morphine to not feel anything.” my dad and uncles said we should all go home until tomorrow. I got up the next morning, cleared the fresh snow from my folks’ driveway, and went back. I stepped out at about lunchtime to take care of the things I was going to do the previous night, and I got back to the assisted living home about 2 minutes after she took her last breath.
she out-lived her husband by almost 30 years. She also out-lived all of her friends from the old neighborhood to the point where she was a bit sad that “no one will be left to come to my funeral.” We were happy to prove her wrong.

That’s the shitty part. My mom died 3 years ago September. She had been complaining about back pain for a while but she wouldn’t see her doctor because she thought it was just a back injury from a horse throwing her. Eventually the pain because unbearable and she went to the hospital. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung and spinal cancer and died 13 days later at 67 years old. The shitty part was that I was on vacation when the ball dropped and she told my father not to call me, so I never really got to say goodbye. Now my dad is in hospice with his lungs hardening at 71. It’s like they’re both far too young to die. At least I’ll still have one more dad.
